On Friday, July 31, 2009, Governor Quinn announced the allocations for Dept of Human Services. The decision was made to cut Domestic Violence by 10% and Sexual Assault by 20%. For Mutual Ground, this translates to about $90,000, a big piece of the $725,000 we normally receive from the state.

Last year Mutual Ground provided over 20,000 hours of counseling and almost 12,000 nights of shelter to over 1700 clients. It costs money to provide safety and healing for all the victims out there.

We need the support of the entire community to get through this year. Make a donation (on-line or with a check). Form a Walk for Hope team. Support the Gala.

Don't forget Mutual Ground.

You can help:
Contact Governor Quinn and any or all of the state legislators. Let them know they must keep full funding for Domestic Violence and Sexual Programs. They must continue to keep all victims safe. The state must not let Mutual Ground or any shelter  have to close.   Write letters to the editor. Tell others about this dire situation. Make your voice heard.

Mutual Ground has provided safety for victims for the last 39 years.  On Sunday, May 31st, the Illinois legislature passed a budget with a 50% cut in human services across the board. For Mutual Ground and all the 52 shelters across the state,  this will mean living much leaner. We have decided to close the emergency shelter portion of Mutual Ground  We would hate to have to go back to times when there were no places of safety for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.  One survivor said it the best, "If Mutual Ground wasn't there to provide safety for me and my children, he would have killed me."

In order to fund the whole budget, the state needs money. The best resource to get additional money is to raise the state's income tax above the current 3%. The State Senate voted for it, the state legislature voted it down.

Please contact your legislators and let them know the lives of victims are at stake. Please implore them to support raising the state income tax.

Please give these victims a chance.

There's a real budget crisis in our state right now.  On Sunday, the Illinois legislature passed a budget with a 50% cut in human services across the board. For Mutual Ground and all the 52 shelters across the state,  this will mean living much leaner--cutting staff, closing the emergency shelter and shutting down the 24hr hotline. Mutual Ground has provided safety for victims since 1975. We would hate to have to go back to times when there were no places of safety for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

In order to fund this budget, the state needs money. The best resource to get additional money is to raise the state's income tax above the current 3%. The State Senate voted for it, the state legislature voted it down. We encourage everyone to contact legislators and ask them to support raising the state income tax.   On June 2 the story made the front page in the Beacon and the Kane County Chronicle.   Here are links to those stories:
